Head shots focus on the head and shoulders, so think interesting collars and necklines
Layers are great for adding texture & variety
Avoid a lot of white, except in small doses underneath another color
Also avoid very bright, saturated colors near your face like magenta, which can cause strangely colored shadows on your neck & face
Avoid large, busy prints. We want the focus to be on your face!
Don’t forget to accessorize with earrings and/or a necklace, but opt for timeless pieces instead of trendy
Make-up
Make-up application needs to be heavier than day to day wear in order to show up in photos
Apply your make-up, then stand back 4 feet from your mirror. Can you see it? If not, apply more!
Bring powder to your session if shine is an issue for you
In doubt? This is a great occasion to hire a professional, or visit the Nordstrom counter on the day of your session!
Hair
In dry or humid weather, use hairspray or putty to tame those flyaways
For women, wear your hair in a way that is natural for you. Allow your hair to frame your face, unless you always wear it up and pulled back.
For men, avoid the “freshly cut” look by getting a haircut at least a week before your session
For women, a haircut and/or styling appointment on the same day of your session is a great idea. I know I always leave my stylist’s chair with fabulous hair!
My approach
Modern & unique. Not your typical stuffy studio head shot
Outdoors using natural light
Camera shy? Don’t worry. I’ll converse with you to draw out your inner supermodel.
Please tell me the intended use for your images, so that I can tailor my approach to your final application.
I’ll provide your digital images to you in both color and black & white.
Please let me know if you need images in horizontal orientation. Otherwise, most head shots are framed vertically.
