This sweet girl turns one today, so in honor of her birthday, I’m sharing the photos I took of her minutes after birth exactly one year ago. Hospital newborn sessions are one of my absolute favorite types of sessions to photograph. It’s such a magical time in the life of a family, and can end up being a blur in your memory without these photos. Swedish Medical Center in Seattle is the most common hospital that I photograph these sessions at, but I’ve also been to the University of Washington Medical Center, Providence in Everett, and Evergreen Health Medical Center in Kirkland. I photograph these sessions using a photojournalistic approach, choosing to document whatever is happening when I’m there without interrupting family bonding time.
This baby girl is the fourth and likely last child for this family, so I know it was extra special for mom to have this day documented. Since I arrived only minutes after baby was born, they were still enjoying lots skin to skin cuddle time. I was also able to document meeting both grandmas (who were so cute snapping away with their cell phones!), meeting the three older siblings, her first meal, and weighing and measuring! Don’t miss the video time capsule I created at the very bottom of this blog post!
This photo of the maternal grandma meeting her granddaughter for the first time is one of my favorites from this day. The expression on her face is just priceless, and I know that as this sweet girl grows up, she will treasure this photo of her grandma. I wish I had a photo like this of my mom meeting my babies for the first time!
Here is their first-born daughter meeting her new little sister, already helping to hold her hands and comfort her as she got her vitamin K injection. She has such a sweet, endearing expression on her face. As a mom myself, I know the apprehension a parent can have about introducing a new baby into the mix, so this photo is such a sweet reminder that siblings really are a gift to your children.
